Photographing the night sky from Deosai and Fairy Meadows

At 4,000 metres with no town within fifty kilometres, the Milky Way is not a faint band — it throws shadows. Deosai and Fairy Meadows are the two darkest places we camp, and after years of watching travelers fight their tripods in the cold, this is the advice our guides give at dinner.

Book by the moon, not the calendar

The sky you came for exists in the week either side of the new moon. Check the lunar calendar before you pick a departure — a full moon at Deosai is beautiful, but it is a different photograph. Our festival and trekking departures list the moon phase on request; just ask when you book.

Position the camp shot at dusk

Compose while there is still light: foreground tent, mid-ground ridge, the Nanga Parbat massif or the Deosai skyline behind. Mark your tripod position, then come back out at 11pm when the core rises. Fumbling for a composition in the dark at minus five is how good sensors meet hard rocks.

Settings that work

A wide lens at f/2.8 or faster, 15–20 seconds, ISO 3200 as the starting point, manual focus set on a bright star with live view. Batteries die fast in the cold — keep spares inside your jacket. A headlamp with a red mode saves both your night vision and your tent-mates' patience.

Both camps sit above 3,300 m, so give yourself an acclimatisation day before a midnight shoot. The photograph is worth staying healthy for.
