Baku, Gobustan & Absheron Land of Fire Tour
Baku's medieval Old City and Zaha Hadid curves, then the ancient fires, rock carvings and mud volcanoes of the Absheron Peninsula.
View trip & itinerary
Azerbaijan sits between the Caspian Sea and the Greater Caucasus, and the two halves of the country could hardly be more different. On the coast is Baku: a walled medieval Old City listed by UNESCO, an oil-boom skyline of glass towers, and around it the dry Absheron Peninsula, where natural gas burns out of a hillside at Yanar Dag, mud volcanoes bubble at Gobustan beside some of the oldest rock carvings in the region, and Indian traders built a fire temple at Surakhani three centuries ago.
A few hours inland the land rises into forested foothills around Gabala and then into the high Caucasus at Shahdag, the country's main mountain resort, and Khinaliq, a stone village at about 2,350 metres with a language of its own. Our two trips split the country along that line: five days based in Baku, or seven days that take in Baku and then the mountains.

From the Caspian coast into the Greater Caucasus: Baku, Shamakhi, the forests and lakes of Gabala, Shahdag and the high village of Khinaliq.
View trip & itineraryThe five-day Land of Fire tour stays in Baku and covers the Old City, Gobustan, the mud volcanoes and the fire sites. The seven-day Grand Caucasus Escape covers Baku and then goes into the mountains at Gabala, Shahdag and Khinaliq.
April to June and September to October for Baku, when it is warm rather than hot. For the mountains, May to October if you want green valleys and walking, December to March if you want snow at Shahdag.
Most travellers do, and most can apply online for the ASAN e-visa at evisa.gov.az. It usually takes about three working days. Check your nationality's eligibility before booking.
Baku and the routes we use are generally safe and easy for visitors. The area along the Armenian border is not somewhere we go. Do not photograph military or government buildings, and carry your passport.
Yes. The two share their Baku days, so a combined trip adds Gobustan and the Absheron fire sites to the mountain itinerary in around nine days. Ask us and we will put it together, privately or for a small group.
