Gilgit-Baltistan Trip Cost 2026–2027: Hunza & Skardu Budget Guide

Last Updated: October 2, 2026 (Exchange Rate: 1 USD ≈ 280 PKR)

Most budget surprises in Gilgit-Baltistan happen where the paved road ends. Your Islamabad hotel will cost exactly what the booking site said. The jeep from Raikot Bridge to Fairy Meadows, however, rarely appears in standard online quotes. At roughly PKR 20,000 per vehicle, it can consume a solo backpacker's entire daily budget in one go.

Because I manage the vehicle fleet at Elham Asia, I see the reality of mountain logistics every day. Just recently, a group of four independent hikers arrived in Skardu having budgeted $40 a day, only to realize their flight cancellation forced them to pay $200 for a last-minute driver up the Karakoram Highway. Below are the actual prices we pay on the ground in PKR and USD for the 2026–2027 season, so you can budget accurately and avoid these surprises.

Quick Answer: How much does a trip to northern Pakistan cost?

For a 2026–2027 trip, budget backpackers using public buses should plan for $35–$50 per day. Independent travelers renting a private car and staying in heated mid-range hotels need $95–$140 per day. Premium all-inclusive guided tours typically cost $140–$180 per day. The biggest hidden expenses are mandatory local 4x4 jeep hires (like the $70 Fairy Meadows transfer) and domestic flight cancellations.

Travel StyleEstimated Daily Cost (USD)What This Includes
Independent Backpacker$35 – $50Long public NATCO bus rides, basic unheated guesthouses, street food, and splitting costs for local jeeps with other travelers.
Mid-Range Independent$95 – $140Private Corolla/BRV rental with a local driver, heated 3-star hotels with views, domestic PIA flights, and restaurant meals.
All-Inclusive Guided Expedition$140 – $180+Premium 4x4 Prado transport, boutique accommodations, all meals, expert guides, and all mandatory local jeep transfers included.

The Cost of Getting North: Flights vs. Driving

Once you land in Islamabad (ISB), you can either fly or drive to the northern valleys of Gilgit or Skardu.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operates daily flights. The aerial views of Nanga Parbat are incredible, but the flights operate strictly on Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and are frequently canceled due to mountain weather. Round-trip fares currently range from PKR 28,000 ($100 USD) for early bookings to over PKR 60,000 ($214 USD) for last-minute, peak-season tickets. The catch is that if your flight is canceled, you must absorb the cost of a last-minute private car (approx. $150–$250) or risk losing your prepaid hotel bookings in the north.

Driving the Karakoram Highway takes 12 to 14 hours. The cheapest option is the Northern Areas Transport Corporation (NATCO) bus, costing around PKR 4,500 ($16 USD) one way. Hiring a private Toyota Corolla with a mountain driver costs roughly PKR 10,000 ($35 USD) per day, plus fuel and the driver's daily food and accommodation allowance.

How much are local mountain jeeps?

Vehicles from major cities are not permitted or physically able to drive on certain remote mountain tracks. You are required to hire union-regulated local 4x4s.

Fairy Meadows is a prime example. You cannot drive your own rental car from Raikot Bridge up to Tattu Village. You must hire a registered local jeep, which currently costs PKR 20,000 ($70 USD) round trip per vehicle. If you need assistance carrying gear on the steep ascent to the meadows, renting a horse costs PKR 3,500 ($12.50 USD) for the uphill climb.

Similarly, crossing the high-altitude Deosai Plains requires a rugged, high-clearance 4x4. Hiring a private Prado for a day trip from Skardu starts around PKR 22,000 ($78 USD). Note that fuel in remote mountain areas often carries a high markup, causing private drivers to raise their rates accordingly.

Sample 10-Day Independent Budget (Mid-Range)

If you are planning a 10-day independent trip covering Skardu, Deosai, Hunza, and Fairy Meadows with a private car (shared between two people) and staying in comfortable, heated 3-star hotels, here is a realistic breakdown per person:

Expense Category (Per Person)Estimated Cost (USD)
PIA Flights (Round Trip ISB-SKD)$150
Private Corolla & Driver (Half Share, 10 days)$175
Driver Food & Accommodation (Half Share)$50
Vehicle Fuel (Half Share)$90
Hotels ($60/night, half share)$300
Food ($20/day)$200
Local Jeeps (Fairy Meadows & Deosai half share)$75
Total Estimated Cost$1,040 USD

Independent Travel vs. All-Inclusive Tours

When you travel independently in the Karakoram, you carry the financial risk of weather delays, road closures, and union price hikes. As the sample budget shows, a mid-range DIY trip runs about $1,040 per person.

For comparison, an all-inclusive package like our 10-Day Hunza & Skardu Tour generally ranges from $1,400 to $1,800 USD. For that difference, you guarantee a vetted mountain driver, absorb zero financial risk for weather-related route changes, and get expert guides, all meals, and every expensive local jeep hire explicitly covered.

If you are attempting a specialized expedition, such as the K2 Base Camp Trek, independent travel is not legally permitted. You must book through a licensed operator. A premium, fully supported 20-day K2 expedition directly through a local operator like Elham Asia will cost between $1,950 and $2,500 USD. Booking the exact same logistics through a Western middleman agency often pushes the price above $4,500 USD.

Do foreigners need a visa for Pakistan, and how much does it cost?

Most foreign travelers need a visa, which you apply for online through Pakistan's official e-visa portal before you fly. Tourist e-visas are currently free for citizens of many countries, but eligibility and processing times vary by nationality, so check the portal for your passport before booking flights.

Do I need a permit to visit Hunza, Skardu, or Fairy Meadows?

Foreigners usually don't need a special permit for popular areas like Hunza, Skardu, Deosai, and Fairy Meadows. You will pass police checkpoints along the Karakoram Highway, so carry your passport and several photocopies of your passport and visa. Restricted-zone treks, including K2 Base Camp, require a permit arranged through a licensed tour operator.

Are ATMs reliable in northern Pakistan?

Not always. ATMs are available in Gilgit, Skardu, and Karimabad, but they often run out of cash or go offline during power outages. Carry enough Pakistani Rupees (PKR) to cover at least three days of expenses, local jeep fees, and tips, since many guesthouses, roadside dhabas, and jeep stands accept cash only.

Is tipping expected, and how much should I budget?

Yes, tipping is a normal part of travel in Pakistan. On a multi-day guided tour, budget roughly $5 to $10 USD per day for your main guide and driver. For porters on trekking routes, the tip amount is usually agreed upfront with your expedition lead.

When is the cheapest time to visit Gilgit-Baltistan?

May and October usually offer the best value. Hotel rates and domestic flight prices rise during peak season from June to August, while the shoulder months bring lower prices and fewer crowds. Keep in mind that Deosai Plains and Babusar Pass are typically only open from around June to September, and nights get cold in October, so bring a warm sleeping bag if you're staying in budget guesthouses.

What should I pack for a trip to northern Pakistan?

Pack warm layers for cold nights, sturdy hiking shoes, a headlamp for power outages, and a power bank. Replacement trekking gear in Gilgit and Skardu is limited and often expensive, so bring what you need from home. Our Northern Pakistan Packing Guide has the full checklist.

Does Elham Asia charge hidden fees for trailhead jeeps?

No. Every Elham Asia quote for our 2026–2027 itineraries includes all mandatory local transport, including the Raikot Bridge jeeps and Deosai 4x4s. We pay our drivers and local partners fairly upfront, so you never have to negotiate on the side of a mountain.
