Sri Lanka Tour Packages

Sri Lanka packs a great deal into an island smaller than Ireland: the fifth-century citadel on Sigiriya rock and the painted caves of Dambulla in the dry north-central plains, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the British hill station of Nuwara Eliya at 1,868 metres among the tea estates, the mountain railway down to Ella, and in the south, Yala National Park, the colonial walls of Galle Fort and a coast of beaches and fishing harbours.

The distances are short but the roads are slow, and the island has two monsoons that reach different coasts at different times, so where you go depends on when. Our two tours split the country the way the weather and the roads do: one through the Cultural Triangle and the hills, one around the wildlife parks and the south coast. They join at Ella and Yala, three hours apart, into a fortnight.

Sri Lanka: common questions

Which Sri Lanka tour should I choose?

For temples, tea country and the train, the 8-day Sigiriya, Kandy and Ella tour. For wildlife and the coast, the 7-day Yala safari and south coast tour. With two weeks, do both: Ella and Yala are about three hours apart.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

December to April is the most reliable for the hill country and the south and west coasts, and it is the whale season at Mirissa. July to September is dry in the Cultural Triangle but brings showers to the hills. October and November are the wettest months on most of our routes.

Can you guarantee a seat on the Ella train?

No. Reserved seats are released a few weeks before travel and sell out within hours. We book the moment your date opens, and if none can be had you take an unreserved ticket or go by road — details on the hill country tour page.

Will I see a leopard in Yala?

Likely in a good season, never guaranteed. Yala Block 1 has one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere, and our Yala tour does two game drives, an afternoon and a dawn, to improve the odds.

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for online before travel. The fee and which nationalities are exempt have changed several times since 2024, so check the official ETA site when you book.
