Pakistan's tourist visa is applied for online, and for most nationalities it is far less painful than its reputation suggests. What trips people up is almost never the visa policy — it is the supporting documents, and specifically the ones only a licensed tour operator can give you.
This is the process as we see it from the operator's side, several hundred times a season.
Visa rules, fees and eligibility change, sometimes at short notice. Treat this page as a guide to the shape of the process, and check the official Pakistani government visa portal — or your nearest Pakistani mission — for the current requirements that apply to your passport before you book flights.
The one caveat worth reading twice
The short version
- Check the current rules for your nationality on the official portal. Entitlements differ enormously by passport and they change — the free Visa Prior to Arrival scheme was withdrawn on 1 January 2026, so anything written before then may describe a rule that no longer exists. - Get your tour operator's documents — the invitation letter and confirmed itinerary. Start this early; it is the slowest part and it is not in your hands.
- Apply online, uploading your passport scan, photograph and the operator's paperwork.
- Pay the fee on the portal and wait. Allow far more time than the stated processing period.
- Print the visa or the approval and carry it with your passport.
What you will be asked to upload
The exact list depends on your nationality and the visa category, but for a tourist visa applied for from abroad it is generally some combination of:
- A passport scan — with validity comfortably beyond your travel dates. Six months' remaining validity is the usual expectation
- A recent photograph to the portal's specification. Get this right; a wrong-sized photo is the single most common resubmission
- An invitation letter from a licensed Pakistani tour operator, or a hotel booking
- A confirmed itinerary showing where you will be and when
- Proof of onward or return travel
- Sometimes proof of funds — a recent bank statement
- For some nationalities, a letter from your employer or evidence of occupation
The invitation letter is the piece worth understanding. It is not a formality: it is a licensed operator putting their registration behind your visit, which is why they will want your full passport details and firm dates before issuing one, and why a company that cannot produce one is telling you something about itself.
What we provide, and when
For anyone booked on one of our trips, we issue as a package:
- The letter of invitation on company letterhead, naming you and your dates
- A copy of our Department of Tourist Services licence
- A day-by-day itinerary in the form the portal expects
- Confirmed hotel bookings for the nights you are with us
- Where the route needs one, the No Objection Certificate application for restricted areas

How long to allow
Whatever the portal says the processing time is, plan on more. Applications get queued, get sent back for a photograph, and get held over public holidays — and the one deadline that does not move is your flight.

Do not buy non-refundable international flights before your visa is issued. We say this to every client and a few of them do it anyway every year.
The mistakes that get applications sent back
- A photograph that does not meet the specification. By far the most common. Read the pixel dimensions and background rules on the portal itself, not on a blog.
- A name that does not match the passport exactly. Including middle names, and including the order they appear in.
- An itinerary that contradicts the invitation letter. If you change your trip after we have issued documents, tell us so we can reissue — do not edit the PDF.
- A passport with under six months' validity, or with no blank pages left.
- Applying for the wrong visa category — a business visa needs entirely different sponsorship, and a tourist visa is what a holiday needs.
- Leaving the NOC to the end. For restricted areas this is a separate process with its own lead time and it cannot be rushed at the airport.
Trekking and climbing: the extra layer
A tourist visa gets you into the country. It does not get you onto a mountain.
Trekking in the Central Karakoram National Park needs park fees and a trekking permit; the Gondogoro La needs its own; and any peak above the trekking threshold needs a climbing permit, which can only be applied for by a licensed operator and which comes with a liaison officer assigned to the expedition. Expedition permits for the summer season are best started the preceding autumn — not in the spring.
If you are planning a Karakoram trek or an expedition, the visa is the easy half of the paperwork and it is the half that should be started second.
Arriving
Most international arrivals come through Islamabad, which is also where our northern trips start. Expect immigration to want to see your visa and, occasionally, the invitation letter — carry a printed copy rather than relying on a phone with a flat battery. Carry two photocopies of your passport and visa page. You will hand them over more often than you expect.
Extending or overstaying
Extensions are possible but slow and best avoided by applying for enough days in the first place. Ask for a longer validity than your itinerary needs — the cost difference is usually trivial and it gives you room if a flight cancels, which on the Skardu and Gilgit routes it regularly does. Overstaying is a fine and a delay at departure; it is not worth the risk of a tight itinerary.

How long does a Pakistan visa take?
The portal publishes a processing time, but allow considerably more — six to eight weeks before departure is our recommended default, and eight to twelve for anything involving a No Objection Certificate or a climbing permit. Do not buy non-refundable flights before the visa is issued.
What is an NOC and do I need one?
A No Objection Certificate is a permit for restricted areas — certain border zones and a handful of valleys. It is arranged in advance by a licensed operator, not by the traveller, and it has its own lead time. The standard northern circuit through Hunza and Skardu does not need one.
Does a tourist visa cover trekking and climbing?
No. Trekking in the national parks requires park fees and a trekking permit, and climbing a peak requires a separate climbing permit with an assigned liaison officer, which only a licensed operator can obtain. Expedition permits for the summer are best started the previous autumn.
How long should I ask my Pakistan visa to be valid for?
