K2 & the Baltoro

The walk up the Baltoro glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp is the finest trek in Pakistan, and by a reasonable argument in the world: nowhere else can you stand in one spot and see four mountains over 8,000 metres. From Skardu, jeeps take you up the Shigar and Braldu valleys to Askole, the last village, and from there it is roughly a week of walking along the Baltoro to Concordia at about 4,600 metres and K2 Base Camp beyond it at about 5,150.

You walk back the way you came, or cross the Gondogoro La at about 5,585 metres into the Hushe valley. The same glacier is the approach to K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums, so it is also where our expeditions start. Every trek and climb here needs a Central Karakoram National Park fee and permits arranged through a licensed operator.

K2 & the Baltoro: common questions

How high is K2 Base Camp?

Roughly 5,150 m. Concordia, where you sleep for two or three nights, is about 4,600 m, and the highest point on the trek is the Gondogoro La at about 5,585 m if you take the traverse.

Do I need climbing experience for the K2 Base Camp trek?

Not for the out-and-back route to Concordia and K2 Base Camp — there is no technical ground on it. The Gondogoro La crossing is different: it has fixed ropes, and you will use a harness and crampons on a pre-dawn start.

What is the best month for the K2 Base Camp trek?

July, for a first trip — it is the warmest and most stable month, and the trail is fully open. Late June is quieter and colder; August works but hazes up in the afternoons.

Is the K2 Base Camp trek dangerous?

The trekking itself is not technical, and the recognised risks are altitude, dehydration, river crossings on the lower Braldu and rockfall on a few short sections. They are managed with acclimatisation days, a licensed guide, treated water, our own kitchen and satellite communication with a named evacuation plan.
